About the qualification

Your studies will cover a range of knowledge and skills including domestic hot and cold water systems, central heating systems, sanitation systems and environmental technology. Successful completion of this qualification reflects the ability to select and use relevant knowledge, ideas, skills and procedures to complete well defined tasks and address straight forward problems. It includes taking responsibility for completing tasks and procedures, and exercising autonomy and judgement subject to overall direction or guidance.

Who is it for

There are no entry requirements for this qualification. However, we will assess your suitability to ensure that you have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification successfully. This qualification is not approved for use by learners under the age of 16.

What will you achieve.

By the end of the course you should be able to…

  • Have essential health & safety knowledge required to work safely in the Building Services Engineering Industries.
  • Develop and continue maintenance of effective working relationships in the Building Services Engineering Industry.
  • Have knowledge in a range of basic measures associated with protection of the environment.
  • Have essential scientific principles that underpin the installation, commissioning and maintenance requirements of systems and components in the Mechanical Engineering Services Industries.
  • Have skills in a range of basic pipework competences that underpin work on plumbing and heating systems.
  • Have skills in the installation, maintenance, decommissioning and soundness testing of a basic range of cold/hot water, wet central heating system/component types and sanitary appliances and connecting sanitary pipework systems in dwellings and industrial/commercial properties (of similar size and scope to domestic dwellings).

Progression routes

A City & Guilds qualification in plumbing can lead directly into employment, offering you the chance to develop your skills and knowledge to a high standard recognised by the industry.

It can help you to progress in a wide range of roles within the domestic plumbing and heating sector, including:

  • Heating and ventilation engineer
  • Specialised craftsperson (plumber or heating engineer)
  • Project development manager
  • Senior skilled operative

You can go unto obtaining your Gas Safe licence by completing Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating.

Qualification objective

This qualification aims to allow learners to become competent to industry standards in either plumbing and heating or domestic heating. Learners are required to demonstrate the ability to perform the necessary skills and the knowledge required to be assessed against the National Occupational Standards.

Examination.

How you will be assessed

Assessment entails a combination of online multiple-choice examinations and building a portfolio of evidence to show your competency skills in-house. You will also be assessed via observation and the development of a portfolio in a working environment to the criteria set out in each unit.

Course Breakdown

To achieve the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, learners must achieve 76 credits from the mandatory units:

  • Understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering
  • Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
  • Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering
  • Understand how to apply scientific principles within mechanical engineering services
  • Understand and carry out site preparation, and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems
  • Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance
  • Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understanding and apply domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environment
  • Install and maintain domestic heating systems
